Control Epistaxis (Nosebleed) Procedure

Control epistaxis is a surgical procedure to stop and prevent recurring cases of nosebleeds. While sporadic nosebleeds are not a cause for concern, frequent and common ones are. There are a few reasons why an individual may experience frequent nosebleeds, and it is important to consult a doctor if you do experience this condition.

This procedure is often recommended to individuals who suffer from persistent nosebleeds and can not manage them through a course of conservative treatment. Oftentimes, doctors will prescribe individuals with this condition a nasal spray, or another form of medication that is meant to manage these frequent nosebleeds.

When is This Procedure Necessary?

A control epistaxis procedure is recommended for patients who experience frequent and recurring epistaxis, or nosebleeds. Nosebleeds can occur due to trauma, nasal dryness, high blood pressure, or underlying medical conditions like respiratory infections and blood disorders. Most of the time, nosebleeds are manageable through simple measures such as pinching the nostrils, but recurrent ones may require more extra treatment, such as a control epistaxis procedure.

What To Expect

Depending on the cause of the nosebleed, the nature of the procedure will vary. However, surgeons will typically use an electrical cautery device or packing. Before the procedure, the surgeon will assess the nose and determine the cause of the persistent nosebleeds.

After the procedure, patients are instructed to keep their heads elevated to minimize swelling and prevent bleeding. The nasal packing inserted during the surgery should be left inside the nose for 24-48 hours. Patients should avoid any strenuous activity as it can interrupt the healing process.
