Tonsillectomy and Adenoidectomy and BMT Procedure

Tonsillectomy, adenoidectomy, and BMT are three ENT procedures commonly performed on children who suffer from recurring infections and breathing problems. A joint procedure comes with many benefits, the most significant one being that patients can recover from all three at once, as opposed to undergoing three separate surgeries. A tonsillectomy involves the removal of the tonsils, which is performed when patients experience recurring tonsillitis. An adenoidectomy is often performed in conjunction with a tonsillectomy, and it involves the removal of the adenoid glands. Lastly, a BMT procedure, also known as a bilateral myringotomy with tubes, is performed to drain excess fluid from the ear and prevent buildup.

ENT conditions are more prevalent in young children because their sinuses are not yet fully developed. Therefore, bacteria is more likely to get stuck in certain areas, which can lead to recurring infections. If antibiotics, ear drops, and other conservative methods do not provide a solution to these ENT problems, a tonsillectomy, adenoidectomy, and BMT procedure may be the next option.

When is this Procedure Necessary?

Children may undergo a tonsillectomy, adenoidectomy, and BMT procedure if they suffer from recurring tonsillitis and ear/sinus infections. Many ENT conditions go hand in hand, so if a patient suffers from persistent ear infections, there is a good chance they also have difficulty breathing or experience recurring sinus infections. For this reason, a joint procedure, such as a tonsillectomy, adenoidectomy, and BMT is often recommended for children with various ENT conditions.

Patients may be a candidate for this procedure if:

  • They suffer from persistent tonsillitis
  • They experience difficulty breathing
  • They experience frequent sinus and ear infections

Preparing for Your Procedure

This procedure can be broken down into three main parts, and the patient will be under general anesthesia throughout. First, the surgeon will access the tonsils through the mouth and will remove them using specialized instruments. Next, the surgeon will remove the adenoid glands, located between the nose and the back of the throat. The surgeon may use sutures to control any resulting bleeding. Lastly, the surgeon will perform a BMT procedure. They will make small incisions in the eardrums of both ears to drain out any built-up fluid. Next, they will insert tiny tubes to allow air to enter and fluid to come out. These tubes typically fall out within 6-12 months, but surgical removal is always an option as well.

After the procedure, it is normal to experience pain in the throat and ears. Patients are given antibiotics and pain medication to prevent infection and manage discomfort. Patients should stick to soft foods in the days following the procedure as it can be painful to eat crunchy foods. Recovery time can vary, but patients should ensure they get plenty of rest in the weeks following.
