Laparoscopic Hernia Repair

Laparoscopic Hernia Repair is a minimally invasive surgical procedure used to fix a hernia—an abnormal bulge caused by tissue or an organ pushing through a weak spot in the abdominal wall. During the procedure, the surgeon makes several small incisions and inserts a laparoscope (a thin tube with a camera) to view the hernia. Specialized instruments are used to push the herniated tissue back into place and reinforce the abdominal wall with a surgical mesh.

When is This Procedure Necessary?

A hernia refers to the pressure of an organ on the abdominal wall, which causes it to weaken. Oftentimes, hernias do not need immediate intervention and they may even go away on their own. However, in instances where the hernia manifests uncomfortable symptoms, patients may consider treatment. There are different treatment options depending on the patient’s preferences and unique health conditions. A laparoscopic approach is an excellent alternative to traditional open hernia repair.

What To Expect

Patients are placed under general anesthesia. The surgeon makes several small incisions in the abdomen. A laparoscope (a thin tube with a camera) is inserted through one incision to view the hernia site. Specialized instruments are inserted through the other incisions to gently push the protruding tissue back into place. A synthetic mesh is positioned over the defect to reinforce the abdominal wall and prevent recurrence. The incisions are closed with sutures or surgical glue. After surgery, patients may experience mild abdominal soreness and bloating. Walking is encouraged soon after the procedure, but heavy lifting should be avoided for several weeks.
