About Ankle Fusion

This procedure is typically recommended for patients who suffer from intense arthritis pain. Over time, the talus and calcaneus bones can rub against each other, causing the cartilage to wear away. This degeneration can lead to inflammation and swelling in the areas surrounding the ankle joint. An ankle fusion procedure can provide a solution for this pain.

During the procedure, the surgeon will reposition the bones in a way that promotes new growth between them. This procedure is an effective solution for patients struggling with severe ankle pain due to arthritis. If you are struggling with a degenerative ankle condition, it is important to learn about all treatment options to make an informed decision.

When is this Procedures Necessary?

As with most surgical procedures, it is highly recommended that patients first consider conservative treatment options. Although you cannot treat underlying arthritis, it is possible to find ways to manage your pain. Often, patients find relief from conservative options including physical therapy, hot and cold therapy, and anti-inflammatory pain medications (NSAIDS).

If these methods are ineffective, you may begin to consider surgery. Depending on your condition, your surgeon will recommend the most effective, least invasive treatment path. An ankle fusion is a great option for patients who have difficulty walking due to their severe ankle arthritis.

You may begin to consider an ankle fusion if:

  • Conservative methods have been ineffective
  • Your arthritis is making it difficult to walk
  • You experience recurring swelling and inflammation

Preparing for Your Procedure

This surgery typically takes between two to three hours. During an ankle fusion, patients will be under general anesthesia to ensure they do not experience pain. The surgeon will begin by making an incision to access the ankle joint. Next, they will remove the cartilage and reposition the bones in a way that will allow for an increased range of motion. These bones will be fastened together using metal plates and screws. As the joint heals over time, the damaged bones will fuse.

After the operation, patients will experience some discomfort in the weeks following. They will be given antibiotics and pain medications to manage any pain they feel. Patients will be given a cast or a walking boot to ensure the area does not become injured during the healing process. It is very important to closely follow all instructions regarding rest and avoiding physical activity. Patients who jump back into their routine too quickly after surgery are at risk of further injuring the newly treated ankle.
