Laparoscopic Tubal Ligation
When is This Procedure Necessary?
There are a few reasons why patients may choose to undergo a laparoscopic hysterectomy with a bladder sling. This procedure is considered medically necessary in a few circumstances including:
- Uterine fibroids
- Endometriosis
- Pelvic organ prolapse
- Abnormal uterine bleeding
A bladder swing is an additional step in the procedure that is recommended for patients suffering from urinary incontinence or bladder leaks.

What To Expect
Patients are placed under general anesthesia. The surgeon makes one or two small incisions in the abdomen, often near the belly button. A laparoscope is inserted to view the fallopian tubes. Using specialized instruments, the surgeon closes off each tube by cutting, tying, or sealing it with heat (cauterization) to prevent future pregnancies. The instruments are removed, and the incisions are closed with sutures or surgical glue. Recovery is usually quick, with mild abdominal discomfort and bloating for a few days. Most patients return to normal activities within a week.
