Shoulder Bone Lesion Removal
When Is a Mastoidectomy Necessary?
Patients may consider a mastoidectomy if they have mastoiditis and it is not responding to antibiotics. If left untreated, the infection could spread to other areas of the skull. Therefore, it is important to be proactive in your treatment and ensure to consult your physician on different treatment options.
A mastoidectomy is necessary if:
- The patient has chronic mastoiditis
- The patient’s condition is not responding to antibiotics
- The infection is spreading

What To Expect
Patients are placed under general anesthesia. The surgeon makes an incision over the shoulder to expose the bone. Using surgical instruments, the bone lesion is carefully removed, preserving as much healthy bone and surrounding tissue as possible. If needed, the area may be filled with bone graft material to restore structure. Once the lesion is removed, the incision is closed with sutures and covered with a sterile dressing. Following surgery, the arm is typically placed in a sling to protect the shoulder. Patients may experience swelling, stiffness, and discomfort for several days. A physical therapy program is usually started after the initial healing period to restore mobility and strength.
