Finger Joint Fusion

Finger Joint Fusion (arthrodesis) is a surgical procedure that permanently joins the bones of a finger joint to relieve pain, correct deformity, or stabilize the joint when other treatments have failed. During the surgery, the damaged cartilage is removed, and the adjacent bones are fixed together using pins, screws, or plates, allowing them to grow into a single solid bone. This fusion eliminates joint movement but provides pain relief and improves finger function, especially in cases of severe arthritis or joint instability.

When Is a Mastoidectomy Necessary?

Patients may consider a mastoidectomy if they have mastoiditis and it is not responding to antibiotics. If left untreated, the infection could spread to other areas of the skull. Therefore, it is important to be proactive in your treatment and ensure to consult your physician on different treatment options.

A mastoidectomy is necessary if:

  • The patient has chronic mastoiditis
  • The patient’s condition is not responding to antibiotics
  • The infection is spreading

What To Expect

Patients are placed under regional anesthesia or general anesthesia. The surgeon makes an incision over the affected joint in the finger. Damaged cartilage is removed from both sides of the joint, and the bones are aligned in the desired position. Small screws, pins, or plates are used to hold the bones together until they fuse into one solid bone. The incision is closed, and a protective splint is applied. After surgery, the splint is worn for several weeks to allow the bones to fuse. Once healed, the joint will no longer bend, but pain should be significantly reduced or eliminated.
