Umbilical Hernia Repair Procedure

An umbilical hernia occurs when part of the intestines pushes into the umbilical ring and creates a visible bulge. This condition is most commonly seen in infants, particularly premature babies, due to their underdeveloped abdominal walls. However, it can also affect adults, especially those who are obese or have had multiple pregnancies. There are a few reasons why an individual may develop an umbilical hernia, including obesity, constipation, vomiting, and pregnancy. Oftentimes, this condition can resolve itself with time, but if it does not, surgical intervention may become necessary.

When is This Procedure Necessary?

Umbilical hernias are common in newborn babies. Around 20% of babies are born with this condition. Most of the time, umbilical hernias close without surgery by the time the patient is five. Surgical intervention becomes necessary in certain scenarios where the hernia continues to grow, becomes painful, or does not go away on its own.

What To Expect

During umbilical hernia surgical intervention, the patients will be under general anesthesia to ensure their comfort. The surgeon will make a small incision in the belly button to access the hernia and push it back into the abdomen. If necessary, the surgeon will stitch muscle layers together at the end. When the goal of the procedure has been achieved, the surgeon will close the incision and the patient will be removed from the anesthesia.

Following the surgical repair of an umbilical hernia, patients can expect a gradual recovery period spanning several weeks. Initially, pain management will be necessary, with prescribed medications effectively alleviating discomfort. Special care should be taken when engaging in physical activities or straining the abdomen area during this time. It is imperative to avoid heavy lifting or intense exercise until the incision site has fully healed, usually around four to six weeks post-surgery.
