Dilation and Curettage Procedure

Dilation and curettage (D&C) is a procedure to remove tissue from the uterus. There are a few reasons why patients may opt to undergo this procedure, including excessive bleeding during menstruation or to clear the uterine lining after a miscarriage or abortion.

Smith Medical Direct Specialty Care is a modern surgical provider offering cash-pay surgery options. We team up with board-certified, in-demand surgeons to help patients find exceptional surgical care. Leave unexpected fees and high deductibles in the past, and say hello to the future of surgical care with Smith Medical.

When is This Procedure Necessary?

Dilation and curettage are considered medically necessary in the following situations:

  • Abnormal uterine bleeding
  • Remove tissue after an abortion or miscarriage
  • Polyps or fibroids
  • Failed medication abortion

Typically, this condition is recommended when conservative treatments have failed to address the underlying issue, such as managing heavy menstrual bleeding with medication or intrauterine devices.

What To Expect

Patients will be under general or local anesthesia to ensure their comfort throughout the procedure. The surgeon will insert a speculum into the vagina. Next, they will dilate the cervix uding a dailator. After this, the surgeon will insert a curette which is used to scrape the lining of the uterus. When the goals of the procedure have been achieved, the surgeon will remove the instruments and the patient will be monitored if they were put under general anesthesia.

After the procedure, patients can expect a relatively quick recovery process. In the immediate postoperative period, individuals may experience mild cramping and light spotting. It is recommended to rest for at least 24 hours following the procedure and avoid strenuous activities for several days to allow the body to heal properly.
