Breast Reduction Procedure

A breast reduction is a reconstructive procedure to remove tissue and skin from the breast to reshape it. The goal of this procedure is to reduce the size of the breast to achieve the look that the patient wants. Although this is commonly done for cosmetic reasons, this procedure can also help patients who suffer from back or shoulder pain due to the size of the breasts. There are a few different surgical approaches to this procedure, and patients should work with their surgeon to determine the approach they are most comfortable with.

Many patients seeking a breast reduction are not able to have it covered by their insurance. In this case, patients may consider a breast reduction with a Direct Specialty Care (DSC) provider. Smith Medical offers affordable plastic surgery to patients seeking transparent, quality care.

When is This Procedure Necessary?

There are a few reasons why patients may consider undergoing a breast reduction procedure. First of all, physical implications such as back, neck, and shoulder pain may cause patients to consider a reduction. Appearance-wise, some patients may decide that they feel more comfortable with smaller breasts. Regardless of the reason, we strongly believe that all patients deserve to feel comfortable and confident in their skin. Smith Medical offers an affordable alternative to traditional, insurance-based breast reduction surgery.

What To Expect

Prior to the procedure, patients will have a consultation with their surgeon to establish their goals with treatment. During this consultation, the incision site and removal method will be determined. Patients will be under general anesthesia to ensure their comfort throughout the procedure. The surgeon will remove the patient’s desired amount of tissue using the method the patient decided on. Once the goal of the procedure has been achieved, the surgeon will close the incision and the patient will be monitored as they are removed from the anesthesia.

Patients may experience discomfort, swelling, and bruising, in the days following the procedure. This is manageable through a course of pain medications and antibiotics prescribed by the doctor. Patients are expected to wear a bandage to protect the surgery site. The surgeon will provide instructions about removal including when the patient can shower. Following surgical instructions is integral to a successful recovery.
