Laparoscopic appendectomy is a minimally invasive surgical procedure that involves the removal of the appendix. An appendectomy is recommended to patients who have an inflamed appendix, which is a medical condition that is often referred to as appendicitis. There are a few reasons why patients may develop appendicitis, but it is usually due to an infection in the digestive tract. If patients begin experiencing appendicitis symptoms, such as sudden, intense pain on the right side of the abdomen, they must seek medical attention immediately. Appendicitis requires immediate surgery to remove the appendix before it bursts and infects the abdominal cavity.

A laparoscopic appendectomy is less invasive than a typical appendectomy, as it involves smaller incisions and the use of a small video camera (a horoscope) to view the area throughout the procedure. This surgical approach offers an array of benefits including a shorter hospital visit and recovery time and less postoperative pain.

When is This Procedure Necessary?

Unlike many medical conditions, emergency surgery is the only way to treat appendicitis. If patients begin experiencing symptoms relating to appendicitis, they must immediately visit a doctor to confirm the diagnosis before getting an appendectomy.

What To Expect

Patients will be under general anesthesia to ensure their comfort throughout the procedure. Next, four small incisions, approximately 5-10mm in size, are made in the abdomen. Carbon dioxide gas is then introduced to inflate the abdominal cavity, creating space for better visibility and manipulation of instruments. A laparoscope – a thin tube with a camera on its tip – is inserted through one of the incisions, allowing surgeons to visualize the internal structures on a monitor. Surgical instruments are inserted through the other incisions to dissect and remove the infected appendix. Once removed, staplers or sutures may be used to close any remaining openings in the intestine. The carbon dioxide gas is subsequently released from the abdominal cavity via trocars or suction devices before closing up incisions using sutures or adhesive strips.
