Cystoscopy with Pyelography Procedure
A cystoscopy with pyelography is a procedure that utilizes a telescope to inspect the urethra and/or bladder. During this procedure, a cystoscope is inserted through the urethra and into the bladder, allowing direct visualization of the bladder and urethra walls. In conjunction with pyelography, a contrast dye is injected into the urinary tract to help highlight any abnormalities in the kidneys, ureters, and bladder on x-ray imaging.

When is This Procedure Necessary?
A Cystoscopy with Pyelography procedure is typically considered medically necessary when a patient presents with symptoms such as blood in the urine, recurrent urinary tract infections, kidney stones, or persistent lower urinary tract issues. This diagnostic procedure allows urologists to visualize the urethra, bladder, and kidneys using a thin tube equipped with a camera and dye that highlights the urinary tract structures. Healthcare providers can make accurate diagnoses and formulate appropriate treatment plans tailored to each individual’s needs by identifying abnormalities such as tumors, strictures, or blockages within the urinary system.

What To Expect
Patients will be under general anesthesia to ensure their comfort throughout the procedure. The surgeon will insert a flexible tube equipped with a camera, known as a cystoscope, through the urethra into the bladder. This enables the physician to examine the inner lining of the bladder for abnormalities such as tumors or inflammation. Additionally, a contrast dye is injected through a catheter into the ureters to highlight any obstructions or abnormalities in the kidneys and renal pelvis. When the goals of the procedure have been achieved, the surgeon will remove the cystoscope and the patient will be monitored as they are removed from the anesthesia.
After undergoing a cystoscopy with pyelography procedure, patients can expect a relatively smooth recovery process. Typically, patients may experience some discomfort, such as a mild burning sensation during urination or blood in the urine, for a few days following the procedure. Drink plenty of water to help flush out any remaining dye that was used during the pyelography. Additionally, patients should avoid strenuous activities for at least 24 hours post-procedure and follow any specific instructions their healthcare provider provides.
