Hammertoe Procedure
A hammertoe procedure is a surgery to correct a toe deformity, where one or more toe(s) bend abnormally at the middle joint. This condition can cause the toe to rub against the shoe, resulting in pain or discomfort when walking, especially long distances. The goal of this procedure is to reconfigure the joint and place the tendon in a position to stay straight.
When is This Procedure Necessary?
Oftentimes, patients can find relief from a hammertoe through conservative methods. Adding padding to the toe or switching to more flexible shoes are excellent options for those seeking a nonsurgical solution. However, if these options do not provide relief, patients may consider undergoing a hammertoe procedure.

What To Expect
Patients will be under local or general anesthesia to ensure their comfort throughout the procedure. Depending on the patient’s unique hammertoe condition, the surgeon will use a different approach. The most common approach is to lengthen the tendons or ligaments to straighten. Other times, the surgeon will remove or reshape bones, or use pins or wires to maintain the length.
After the procedure, patients may experience swelling, bruising, and pain. Patients will typically wear a cast or boot following the procedure to prevent injury and encourage healing. In the weeks following, patients cannot drive and may need crutches. The doctor will let the patient know when the site has healed and when they can reengage in physical activity.
