The surgeon will begin by making a small incision above the metatarsophalangeal joint so they can examine it. Next, the surgeon will remove portions of the cartilage to realign the bones and fuse them using pins or screws. After the procedure, patients may experience some discomfort so they will be instructed to take antibiotics and pain medication for a successful, comfortable recovery. Recovery times vary, but it will typically take between four to six weeks. After this, patients should be careful when exercising or participating in physical activities to ensure they do not further injure the area.
