Procedimiento de Kidner

Most individuals are born with seven bones in the back region of the foot, known as the tarsal bones. However, some are born with eight, resulting in an extra bone present on the inner side of the foot, known as the accessory navicular bone. This condition, referred to as accessory navicular syndrome, can result in pain and discomfort caused by its rubbing against nearby tendons or other structures. This surgical intervention is typically recommended when conservative treatments, such as orthotics or physical therapy, have failed to provide relief. During this procedure, the surgeon will remove the accessory navicular bone, relieving the patient of the discomfort they typically experience.

ĀæCuando es necesario este procedimiento?

The Kidner procedure is recommended for patients with an accessory navicular bone that causes pain and discomfort. If patients cannot find relief through conservative, nonsurgical efforts, they may consider a Kidner procedure. The overall goal of treatment is to reduce inflammation, restore proper alignment, and improve the function of the foot. Although many patients have found relief without the need for surgery, a Kidner procedure is recommended in more severe cases.

Patients are under general anesthesia to ensure their comfort throughout the procedure. The surgeon will begin by making an incision at the footā€™s top, or the instep, to access the accessory navicular bone. The surgeon will carefully detach the accessory navicular bone from the tibial tendon and will separate the accessory from the navicular bone. If necessary, the surgeon may cut the tissue to successfully separate the two bones. When the goal of the procedure is achieved, the surgeon will close the incision, and the patient is removed from the anesthesia.

After the procedure, the foot is bandaged and put in a splint. Patients are expected to keep weight off the foot by using crutches in the weeks following. Typically, patients can return to their normal activity within 3-4 months. However, it is important to check with your surgeon for approval.
