Biopsy or Excision of Lymph Node

Biopsy or Excision of Lymph Node - An excisional biopsy or lymph node excision refers to the complete removal of one or more lymph nodes, typically when they are enlarged, suspicious on imaging, or require full removal for accurate diagnosis or treatment.

When is this Procedure Necessary?

A lymph node excision biopsy becomes medically necessary when diagnostics reveal an abnormality in the lymph nodes. This procedure allows healthcare professionals to assess the stage of the disease and formulate an appropriate treatment plan. Lymph node excision biopsy becomes crucial when a patient presents with enlarged or palpable lymph nodes, persistent unexplained fever, unexplained weight loss, night sweats, fatigue, or other symptoms suggestive of lymphatic system involvement. Additionally, it can aid in identifying infections caused by bacteria, viruses, or fungi present within the lymph nodes. By extracting a sample through surgical removal followed by laboratory analysis under a microscope, doctors can accurately diagnose and provide personalized treatment plans for patients suffering from various diseases impacting the lymphatic system.

What To Expect

Patients may receive local anesthesia with sedation or general anesthesia depending on the size and location of the lymph node. After anesthesia takes effect, the surgeon makes a small incision over the targeted area. For a biopsy, a portion of the lymph node is carefully removed for lab testing; for an excision, the entire lymph node is taken out. The surgeon controls any bleeding, then closes the incision with sutures. A sterile dressing is applied. After the procedure, patients may have mild swelling, bruising, or tenderness at the incision site. Recovery is generally quick, often within a few days. If stitches are used, they may need to be removed at a follow-up visit.
