Myringoplasty, Bilateral Procedure

A bilateral myringoplasty is a surgical procedure to repair perforations in the eardrums of both ears. A perforation typically forms as a result of a recurring infection in the middle ear. In some cases, an accident or traumatic injury can also result in a perforated eardrum. This procedure is achieved by placing a small piece of graft into the hole. The graft can either be made of tissue from the body or artificially.

A hole in the eardrum can result in hearing loss and recurring infections. If a patient recognizes a perforation in the eardrum, it is important to consult your doctor in a timely matter. This procedure is often performed in conjunction with a tympanoplasty but can be performed alone as well. Many patients opt for a bilateral myringoplasty because it can be less expensive than having two separate procedures.

When is this Procedure Necessary?

Patients may consider a bilateral myringoplasty procedure if a perforation in the eardrum is affecting their ability to hear. It may also be necessary if the ears have recurring infections. If patients hold off on treatment for an extended period of time, they may experience more infections and this will cause hearing to worsen. If patients notice they have a perforation in the eardrum, it is very important to be proactive in treatment.

A myringoplasty is necessary if:

  • A perforation in the eardrum is causing hearing loss
  • A perforation in the eardrum is causing ear infections
  • A perforation in the eardrum hasn’t healed after three months
  • The patient has a perforation in both ears

Preparing for Your Procedure

Prior to this procedure, the doctor will provide details regarding what to expect before, during, and after. A myringoplasty is typically performed under general anesthesia. Therefore, patients must follow all instructions regarding eating on the day of the procedure.

During the procedure, the patient will not experience any discomfort. The surgeon will make an incision either behind or in front of the ear to access and lift the eardrum. They will then place a graft to fill the perforation, supported by a dissolving sponge. They will then place the eardrum back and will close the incision. This procedure is repeated on both ears.

Patients will be given eardrops to use during the recovery process which will help to prevent infection. Patients may experience pain in the week following the procedure, but with time, it will begin to heal. It may be painful to eat hard or crunchy foods in the days following, so it is often recommended that patients stick to soft foods at first. The recovery process typically takes between one to two weeks.
