Ear Foreign Body Removal Procedure

Foreign body removal procedures are more common than you might think, especially in emergency rooms. This procedure involves removing a foreign object from inside the ear. Although most commonly performed in children, a foreign body removal procedure is an option for any individual suffering from an object stuck inside the ear.

It is important to seek help when an object becomes lodged in the ear because it could potentially lead to hearing loss or infection if left for too long. If an object becomes stuck in the ear, and it is not possible to remove it safely at home, it is important to seek help immediately.

When is this Procedure Necessary?

If a foreign body becomes lodged in the ear, you must understand when it is necessary to seek medical attention. Once an object is stuck, you can try to remove it yourself. If it does not come out easily, you may need a doctor to do it safely. If you continuously try to remove it yourself, it can lead to permanent damage and/or infection. If you experience bleeding, irritation, drainage, or severe pain, consult a doctor immediately.

Foreign body removal may be necessary if:

  • The patient notices drainage, intense pain, or bleeding
  • The object that is stuck contains harmful chemicals
  • The patient can’t remove it themselves
  • The surrounding area is red

Preparing for Your Procedure

Depending on the object, the doctor will use a different removal technique. Unless the object is lodged deep in the ear, this procedure is typically performed without the need for any anesthesia. When the procedure is completed, patients should keep an eye on their hearing in the following days to ensure they did not lose any of their hearing
