Overview
The cochlear implant procedure is performed to improve hearing in individuals with severe to profound hearing loss. During this procedure, a surgeon will insert an electronic device into the inner ear of the patient. This implant comprises an external microphone that captures the sound and transmits it to a processor worn outside the body, which converts the signal to an electrical impulse sent to electrodes in the inner ear. The electrodes then stimulate auditory nerve impulses, allowing the brain to interpret sound. This procedure is performed under general anesthesia and can take several hours.

About Cochlear Implants
After surgery, patients typically undergo auditory rehabilitation therapy, including speech therapy and auditory training, to learn how to use their new device effectively. While cochlear implants can significantly improve communication and quality of life for individuals with severe hearing loss, they are not suitable for everyone and come with potential risks and side effects such as infection or nerve damage. Candidacy for a cochlear implant varies based on factors such as age, degree of hearing loss, speech-language skills, medical history, and motivation to participate in post-surgical rehabilitation therapy.
When is this Procedures Necessary?
Depending on the severity of a patient’s hearing loss, they will have a different form of hearing device suggested to them. While many patients can regain the ability to hear through the use of a hearing aid, this is not the case for everyone. A hearing aid amplifies the sound, whereas a cochlear implant delivers sound directly to the auditory nerve. The following individuals may be candidates for cochlear implant surgery:
- You have severe to profound hearing loss
- You have functioning auditory nerves
- You have tried hearing aids and they do not work
- You are willing to go through speech therapy
There are very specific requirements for cochlear implant candidates. If you are considering this procedure to improve your hearing, it is important that you consult with your doctor to ensure you meet the qualifications.

Preparing for Your Procedure
After the anesthesia has worn off, you may experience some discomfort or pressure around the implant. This should fade over time, but you can take anti-inflammatory pain medication, such as ibuprofen, to manage your pain. It is important to contact your doctor if you experience any serious postoperative pain.
After you have had time to recover, your doctor will let you know when you can activate the device and pair it with a sound processor. Patients need to undergo aural rehabilitation so they can understand sounds.
