Excision of a Soft Tissue Tumor in the Neck
When Is a Mastoidectomy Necessary?
Patients may consider a mastoidectomy if they have mastoiditis and it is not responding to antibiotics. If left untreated, the infection could spread to other areas of the skull. Therefore, it is important to be proactive in your treatment and ensure to consult your physician on different treatment options.
A mastoidectomy is necessary if:
- The patient has chronic mastoiditis
- The patient’s condition is not responding to antibiotics
- The infection is spreading

What To Expect
Patients are placed under general anesthesia. The surgeon makes a small incision directly over the tumor site in the neck. Using careful dissection, the surgeon separates the tumor from surrounding muscles, nerves, and blood vessels while preserving healthy tissue. Once the tumor is removed, the incision is closed with sutures and covered with a sterile dressing. Following surgery, patients may have mild swelling, bruising, or discomfort in the neck area. Most can return to light activity within a few days, but strenuous activity should be avoided until cleared by the surgeon. If the tumor is sent for pathology, results are typically available within a week.
