Septoplasty Procedure

A septoplasty is a surgical procedure performed to correct a deviated septum. A deviated septum occurs when the septum is off-center, resulting in difficulty breathing, reduced airflow, and other debilitating symptoms. Patients may consider this procedure if they have a deviated septum that is severely hindering their ability to comfortably breathe. Most of the time, patients with a deviated septum were born with this condition. However, certain injuries can also cause the septum to deviate, leaving patients with the symptoms. A septoplasty procedure can benefit a broad array of patients who experience trouble breathing due to a deviated septum. Septoplasty, turbinate resection, and tonsillectomy are three ENT procedures that are performed to address common issues in the nose and throat. A septoplasty is a nasal procedure that involves straightening a deviated septum to improve airflow. Turbinate resection aims to reduce the size of swollen turbinates. Lastly, a tonsillectomy involves the surgical removal of the tonsils due to recurrent infections, sleep apnea, or other issues. These procedures are often performed in conjunction with one another if the patient suffers from these three conditions and would benefit from all three.

When is this Procedure Necessary?

Oftentimes, individuals with a deviated septum are not aware of it. This is because it is still possible to breathe comfortably with this condition, however, they may notice it later in life. In addition to improving breathing, a septoplasty can also reduce nosebleeds, remove nasal polyps, and manage recurring infections.

Patients may consider a septoplasty if:

  • It is difficult to breathe due to a deviated septum
  • They experience recurring infections or nosebleeds
  • They experience sleep apnea or snoring due to a deviated septum

Preparing for Your Procedure

Prior to your septoplasty, you will meet with your surgeon for a consultation to go over your upcoming procedure. The surgeon will use an examination technique to determine whether the patient would benefit from this procedure. If the patient and surgeon agree a septoplasty is the best option, they will move forward and discuss instructions for surgery. During the procedure, the patient will be under general anesthesia to ensure their comfort. The surgeon will make a small incision in the nose to access the septum and will then realign, reshape, and trim excess cartilage that is obstructing the airflow through your nose. The surgery usually takes less than two hours with patients going home within a few hours post-surgery. Although septoplasty is a safe and effective procedure for treating nasal obstructions caused by a deviated septum, it is important for individuals considering this option to thoroughly discuss risks and expectations with a qualified healthcare professional before proceeding. After the procedure, patients are expected to follow a strict postoperative care routine. It will typically take between one to two weeks for patients to recover, although they should continue to be careful in the weeks following. Patients may experience swelling, pain, and congestion, but this should go away with time.
