Sialolithotomy Procedure
Sialolithiasis is the medical term describing salivary gland stones. If a stone blocks the salivary ducts, it prevents the flow of saliva, resulting in swelling, pain, and other forms of discomfort. A sialolithotomy is a surgical procedure that involves the removal of salivary gland stones. Surgical removal may be necessary if an individual has recurring stones or they have caused an infection.
This procedure is fairly common and can be performed differently depending on the severity of the condition and the doctor’s experience. If you have been diagnosed with salivary gland stones and are experiencing painful swelling and other uncomfortable symptoms, you may be a candidate for a sialolithotomy procedure.
When is this Procedure Necessary?
Surgery is not always necessary for individuals who have been diagnosed with sialolithiasis. However, if the stones are large enough and are causing saliva blockage and painful swelling, then patients may begin to consider surgical removal. If left untreated for a prolonged period of time, this can lead to infection and further complications.
Patients may be a candidate for a sialolithotomy if:
- The stone is large and is disrupting the salivary flow
- The stone is causing significant swelling and pain
- The condition is leading to infection
- The stone is not passing on its own

During the procedure, the surgeon will make a small incision to access the salivary glands. They will then carefully extract the stones that have caused blockage using special tools. This procedure typically takes between 1.5 to 2 hours.
After the procedure, patients may experience discomfort and swelling around the area but will be given pain medication to manage any discomfort. Soft foods are recommended in the days following surgery, as swallowing might be uncomfortable at first. Most of the time, the recovery process will take a few days and patients will feel relief within a month.
