Thyroid Biopsy
When Is a Mastoidectomy Necessary?
Patients may consider a mastoidectomy if they have mastoiditis and it is not responding to antibiotics. If left untreated, the infection could spread to other areas of the skull. Therefore, it is important to be proactive in your treatment and ensure to consult your physician on different treatment options.
A mastoidectomy is necessary if:
- The patient has chronic mastoiditis
- The patient’s condition is not responding to antibiotics
- The infection is spreading

What To Expect
A thyroid biopsy is often performed under local anesthesia, sometimes with mild sedation. The surgeon or radiologist uses ultrasound imaging to precisely locate the area of concern within the thyroid gland. A thin, hollow needle is inserted through the skin of the neck into the thyroid, and small tissue samples are collected for laboratory testing. This process may be repeated several times to ensure an adequate sample is obtained. No large incisions are required. After the biopsy, patients may experience mild tenderness or bruising at the puncture site. Most can return to normal activities immediately, with only minor restrictions for the rest of the day. Results from the biopsy are typically available within a few days.
