Tonsillectomy, Ear Tubes, Adenoidectomy
When Is a Mastoidectomy Necessary?
Patients may consider a mastoidectomy if they have mastoiditis and it is not responding to antibiotics. If left untreated, the infection could spread to other areas of the skull. Therefore, it is important to be proactive in your treatment and ensure to consult your physician on different treatment options.
A mastoidectomy is necessary if:
- The patient has chronic mastoiditis
- The patient’s condition is not responding to antibiotics
- The infection is spreading

What To Expect
Patients are placed under general anesthesia. The surgeon removes the tonsils through the mouth using a specialized device that cuts and seals tissue to reduce bleeding. Next, the adenoids — small lymphatic tissue located behind the nose — are removed using a curette or suction cautery. Removal of the adenoids helps improve breathing and reduce chronic ear or sinus infections. For the ear tube portion, a small incision is made in the eardrum, any trapped fluid is suctioned out, and a ventilation tube is inserted to maintain middle ear drainage. The entire procedure is performed without external incisions. Following surgery, patients may have a sore throat, nasal congestion, mild ear discomfort, and temporary changes in voice or swallowing. Recovery from tonsil and adenoid removal is typically one to two weeks. Ear tube recovery is quick, often within a day, though water precautions may be recommended to prevent infection.
