Removal of Deep Orthopedic Implant
When Is a Mastoidectomy Necessary?
Patients may consider a mastoidectomy if they have mastoiditis and it is not responding to antibiotics. If left untreated, the infection could spread to other areas of the skull. Therefore, it is important to be proactive in your treatment and ensure to consult your physician on different treatment options.
A mastoidectomy is necessary if:
- The patient has chronic mastoiditis
- The patient’s condition is not responding to antibiotics
- The infection is spreading

What To Expect
Patients are placed under general or regional anesthesia. The surgeon reopens the original incision site used for the implant. Soft tissue is gently moved aside to expose the hardware, which may include plates, screws, or rods located deep within the bone. Specialized instruments are used to remove the implant without damaging surrounding bone or tissue. The incision is then closed and dressed.
Recovery depends on the size and location of the implant removed. Mild swelling and discomfort are expected, but most patients can resume light activities within a few days to weeks.
