Laparoscopic Cholecystectomy Procedure

Laparoscopic cholecystectomy is a surgical procedure to remove the gallbladder using a small camera as a guide, known as a laparoscope. This procedure is typically recommended to patients who have gallstones in their gallbladder or if they suffer from pancreas inflammation due to gallstones. Compared to traditional open surgery, laparoscopic cholecystectomy offers numerous benefits such as shorter recovery time, less postoperative pain, and reduced risk of complications such as infection. Additionally, patients typically experience minimal scarring and can return to their regular activities much sooner.

When is This Procedure Necessary?

Laparoscopic cholecystectomy is considered medically necessary if a patient suffers from recurrent episodes of gallstones causing acute cholecystitis, biliary colic, or complications such as pancreatitis. Additionally, this procedure may be necessary when the presence of gallstones leads to severe pain, jaundice, or inflammation of the bile ducts. Patients who develop complications from their gallstones that are not well managed with conservative treatment options may require a Laparoscopic Cholecystectomy to alleviate symptoms and prevent further health issues.

Meet our General Surgery Doctors

What To Expect

Patients will be under general anesthesia to ensure their comfort throughout the procedure. During a laparoscopic cholecystectomy, the surgeon will make small incisions in the abdominal region and then insert the laparoscope through one of the incisions to monitor the gallbladder. The surgeon will use the visualization to carefully use specialized tools to remove the gallbladder. When the goal of the procedure has been achieved, the surgeon will close the incision, and the patient is monitored as they are removed from anesthesia.

Immediately after surgery, patients are monitored closely for any signs of complications such as bleeding or infection. Patients may experience mild pain and discomfort at the incision sites, but this can be managed with prescribed pain medication. It is recommended to gradually resume normal activities within a week post-surgery, starting with light walking and slowly increasing physical activity as tolerated.
