Plantar Fasciotomy Procedure

A plantar fasciotomy is a surgical procedure that treats plantar fasciitis, a common condition characterized by inflammation of the plantar fascia. This is the ligament that runs along the bottom of the foot, and it is responsible for providing support to the arch of the foot. When this ligament becomes inflamed, it can result in debilitating pain in the heel when walking and standing.

A plantar fasciotomy procedure intends to release tension by detaching the fascia. Eventually, the tissue will grow back and will result in a more lengthened ligament. Although this treatment is very effective in treating plantar fasciitis, it should be considered as a last resort. Oftentimes, patients are able to find relief through conservative methods including physical therapy, orthotics, and medication. In the case these treatments are ineffective, patients may consider a plantar fasciotomy.

When is this Procedure Necessary?

Many patients live with plantar fasciitis for years before seeking help. However, an early diagnosis is key to finding sufficient relief. When caught in the early stages, patients are often able to treat the condition through conservative efforts before even considering surgery. If conservative treatments are ineffective, a plantar fasciotomy may be recommended next.

Patients may be a candidate for a plantar fasciotomy procedure if:

  • The plantar fascia is inflamed
  • Day-to-day activities such as walking or standing become painful
  • Conservative efforts such as physical therapy are ineffective

Preparing for Your Procedure

Patients will be given a local anesthetic to ensure their comfort throughout the procedure. The surgeon will begin by making an incision along each side of the heel. This procedure can be performed endoscopically or openly, so the procedure will differ depending on the surgical approach. During an endoscopic plantar fasciotomy, the surgeon will use a small camera to monitor the area, while open surgery requires a larger incision. Regardless of the surgical approach, the goal of the procedure is to cut the plantar fascia to release any pressure. Once finished, the surgeon will close the incision.

After the procedure, patients may experience swelling, pain, and bruises at the site of the incision. Patients will be given pain medications to manage this discomfort. It is very important for patients to stay off the foot in the weeks following surgery until the area has fully healed.
