Hysteroscopic Removal of Adhesions or Myomas

Hysteroscopic Removal of Adhesions or Myomas is a minimally invasive procedure used to treat intrauterine conditions such as uterine adhesions (Asherman’s syndrome) or submucosal fibroids (myomas) that can cause abnormal bleeding, infertility, or pelvic pain. Using a hysteroscope, a thin, lighted instrument inserted through the cervix, the surgeon visualizes the inside of the uterus. Specialized instruments are then used to remove scar tissue (adhesiolysis) or fibroids (myomectomy) without any external incisions.

When is This Procedure Necessary?

There are a few reasons why patients may choose to undergo a laparoscopic hysterectomy with a bladder sling. This procedure is considered medically necessary in a few circumstances including:

  • Uterine fibroids
  • Endometriosis
  • Pelvic organ prolapse
  • Abnormal uterine bleeding

A bladder swing is an additional step in the procedure that is recommended for patients suffering from urinary incontinence or bladder leaks.

What To Expect

Patients are placed under general or regional anesthesia. A hysteroscope — a thin, lighted tube with a camera — is inserted through the vagina and cervix into the uterus. This allows the surgeon to view the inside of the uterus on a monitor. Specialized instruments are passed through the hysteroscope to remove adhesions (scar tissue) or myomas (fibroids) without making any abdominal incisions. The instruments cut and remove the tissue while preserving the healthy uterine lining. Following the procedure, patients may experience mild cramping or light vaginal bleeding for a few days. Most can resume normal activities within one to two days, but strenuous exercise and intercourse may be restricted temporarily.
