Laparoscopic Hysterectomy with Removal or Repair of Fallopian Tubes or Ovaries

Laparoscopic Hysterectomy with Removal or Repair of Fallopian Tubes or Ovaries is a minimally invasive surgical procedure that involves removing the uterus along with evaluation, repair, or removal of one or both fallopian tubes and/or ovaries, depending on the patient's condition. Using small incisions and a laparoscope (a thin, lighted camera), the surgeon accesses the pelvic organs.

When is This Procedure Necessary?

There are a few reasons why patients may choose to undergo a laparoscopic hysterectomy with a bladder sling. This procedure is considered medically necessary in a few circumstances including:

  • Uterine fibroids
  • Endometriosis
  • Pelvic organ prolapse
  • Abnormal uterine bleeding

A bladder swing is an additional step in the procedure that is recommended for patients suffering from urinary incontinence or bladder leaks.

What To Expect

Patients are placed under general anesthesia. The surgeon makes small incisions in the abdomen and inserts a laparoscope to view the pelvic organs. The uterus is detached from surrounding tissues, and the fallopian tubes and/or ovaries are either removed or repaired, depending on the surgical plan. The organs are removed through the vagina or in small sections through the abdominal incisions. All incisions are then closed with sutures or surgical glue. Following surgery, patients may experience mild to moderate abdominal discomfort, bloating, and fatigue. Walking is encouraged early, but lifting and strenuous activity should be avoided for four to six weeks. Recovery may take longer if multiple organs were removed or repaired.
