Laparoscopic Hysterectomy
Laparoscopic Hysterectomy is a minimally invasive surgical procedure to remove the uterus using small incisions and a laparoscope—a thin, lighted camera inserted through the abdomen.
It may be performed to treat conditions such as uterine fibroids, abnormal bleeding, endometriosis, chronic pelvic pain, or cancer.
When is This Procedure Necessary?
There are a few reasons why patients may choose to undergo a laparoscopic hysterectomy with a bladder sling. This procedure is considered medically necessary in a few circumstances including:
- Uterine fibroids
- Endometriosis
- Pelvic organ prolapse
- Abnormal uterine bleeding
A bladder swing is an additional step in the procedure that is recommended for patients suffering from urinary incontinence or bladder leaks.

What To Expect
Patients are placed under general anesthesia. The surgeon makes several small incisions in the abdomen and inserts a laparoscope to view the pelvic organs. Specialized instruments are used to detach the uterus from surrounding tissues and blood vessels. The uterus is then removed either through the vagina or in small pieces through the abdominal incisions. The incisions are closed with sutures or surgical glue. After surgery, patients may have mild abdominal discomfort, bloating, and fatigue for several days. Walking is encouraged soon after surgery, but heavy lifting and strenuous activity should be avoided for four to six weeks.
