When is This Procedure Necessary?
Oftentimes, abscesses can be treated through the use of antibiotics. However, if conservative efforts are ineffective at providing relief, surgical intervention may be recommended. If left untreated, an infected abscess can spread to surrounding tissues and cause serious health concerns including pneumonia, inflammation in the heart, and brain abscess.
Meet our General Surgery Doctors
What To Expect
Patients are placed under general anesthesia. The surgeon makes an incision across the breast and removes all breast tissue. In some cases, nearby lymph nodes are also removed for testing. If immediate reconstruction is planned, the reconstructive surgeon will begin work during the same operation. The incision is closed with sutures or staples, and a sterile dressing is applied. Often, temporary surgical drains are placed to prevent fluid buildup. After surgery, patients may experience soreness, swelling, and numbness in the chest area. Drains are typically removed within 1–2 weeks. Recovery time varies depending on whether reconstruction is performed, but most patients resume light activity within several weeks.
