What To Expect
Patients will be under general anesthesia to ensure their comfort throughout the procedure. The surgeon will make an incision in the vaginal wall and then reposition the rectum into its normal position. Oftentimes, the surgeon will tighten or reinforce the weak pelvic floor muscles to provide long-term support. Once the goals of the procedure have been achieved, the surgeon will close any incisions and the patient will be monitored as they are removed from the anesthesia.
Patients may experience discomfort in the days following the procedure. This is manageable through a course of anti-inflammatory pain medications. Patients should plan for their recovery to last a couple weeks in which time they should avoid strenuous or sexual activity. Eventually, patients will engage in physical therapy to strengthen their pelvic floor.
