Foot/Toe Joint Fusion

Foot and toe joint fusion,  is a surgical procedure in which the bones forming a joint in the foot or toes are permanently joined together. This is done by removing the cartilage surfaces of the joint and stabilizing the bones with internal fixation devices such as screws or plates. The goal is to eliminate painful motion in a damaged or arthritic joint, thereby relieving pain, correcting deformities, and improving foot stability and function.

When is this Procedure Necessary?

As with most surgical procedures, it is highly recommended that patients first consider conservative treatment options. Although you cannot treat underlying arthritis, it is possible to find ways to manage your pain. Often, patients find relief from conservative options including physical therapy, hot and cold therapy, and anti-inflammatory pain medications.

If these methods are ineffective, you may begin to consider surgery. Depending on your condition, your surgeon will recommend the most effective, least invasive treatment path. An arthroscopic ankle assessment with Brostrom ligament repair is an excellent surgical option for patients who experience difficulty walking and other debilitating symptoms.

You may begin to consider an arthroscopic ankle assessment with Brostrom ligament repair if:

  • You experience constant chronic ankle pain
  • Recurring ankle sprains
  • Midfoot cavus
  • Plantar flexion of the first ray

What To Expect

Patients are placed under general or regional anesthesia. The surgeon makes an incision over the affected joint. Damaged cartilage is removed from both sides of the joint surfaces. The bones are then positioned in the desired alignment and secured together with screws, plates, or wires so they can fuse into a single solid bone. The incision is closed, and a protective cast or boot is applied. Following surgery, weight-bearing is often limited until the bones have fully fused, which may take several weeks to months. Physical therapy may be recommended once healing has progressed.
