Open Treatment of Metatarsal Fracture Repair
When Is a Mastoidectomy Necessary?
Patients may consider a mastoidectomy if they have mastoiditis and it is not responding to antibiotics. If left untreated, the infection could spread to other areas of the skull. Therefore, it is important to be proactive in your treatment and ensure to consult your physician on different treatment options.
A mastoidectomy is necessary if:
- The patient has chronic mastoiditis
- The patient’s condition is not responding to antibiotics
- The infection is spreading

What To Expect
Patients are placed under general or regional anesthesia. The surgeon makes a small incision over the fractured bone in the foot. The broken bone fragments are carefully realigned and stabilized using small plates, screws, or pins. Once the repair is complete, the incision is closed and covered with a sterile dressing.
After surgery, the patient may be placed in a cast, splint, or walking boot. Weight-bearing is often limited for several weeks to allow proper healing. Swelling and tenderness are common but gradually improve with time and rehabilitation.
