Knee Arthrotomy
Knee Arthrotomy is a surgical procedure involving an open incision into the knee joint to allow direct visualization and access to the joint structures. This approach is typically used to treat complex knee conditions such as severe infections, large tumors, extensive joint damage, or to perform major repairs that cannot be done arthroscopically. During the procedure, the surgeon opens the knee capsule to remove damaged tissue, repair structures, or address abnormalities.
Recovery depends on the extent of the surgery but usually involves a period of immobilization followed by physical therapy to restore knee function.
When Is a Mastoidectomy Necessary?
Patients may consider a mastoidectomy if they have mastoiditis and it is not responding to antibiotics. If left untreated, the infection could spread to other areas of the skull. Therefore, it is important to be proactive in your treatment and ensure to consult your physician on different treatment options.
A mastoidectomy is necessary if:
- The patient has chronic mastoiditis
- The patient’s condition is not responding to antibiotics
- The infection is spreading

What To Expect
Patients are placed under general or regional anesthesia. The surgeon makes an incision over the knee joint and carefully opens the joint capsule to directly access the inside of the knee. This allows for removal of damaged tissue, drainage of infection, or repair of internal structures. Once the procedure is complete, the capsule and skin are closed with sutures, and a sterile dressing is applied. After surgery, patients may experience swelling, stiffness, and discomfort in the knee. Ice, elevation, and gentle motion exercises are often recommended early in recovery, followed by physical therapy.
