When Is a Mastoidectomy Necessary?
Patients may consider a mastoidectomy if they have mastoiditis and it is not responding to antibiotics. If left untreated, the infection could spread to other areas of the skull. Therefore, it is important to be proactive in your treatment and ensure to consult your physician on different treatment options.
A mastoidectomy is necessary if:
- The patient has chronic mastoiditis
- The patient’s condition is not responding to antibiotics
- The infection is spreading

What To Expect
Patients are placed under general or regional anesthesia. An incision is made just above the kneecap to expose the torn quadriceps tendon. Damaged edges are trimmed, and the tendon is reattached to the kneecap using strong sutures or anchors placed into the bone. The incision is closed, and the knee is placed in a brace to limit movement. Postoperatively, weight-bearing may be restricted, and a rehabilitation program is started to restore knee strength and mobility. Recovery may take several months for full function to return.
