Arthroscopic Shoulder Repair
When Is a Mastoidectomy Necessary?
Patients may consider a mastoidectomy if they have mastoiditis and it is not responding to antibiotics. If left untreated, the infection could spread to other areas of the skull. Therefore, it is important to be proactive in your treatment and ensure to consult your physician on different treatment options.
A mastoidectomy is necessary if:
- The patient has chronic mastoiditis
- The patient’s condition is not responding to antibiotics
- The infection is spreading

What To Expect
Patients are placed under general anesthesia. The surgeon makes several small incisions around the shoulder and inserts an arthroscope (a small camera) to view the inside of the joint. Through other small incisions, specialized instruments are inserted to repair damaged structures such as torn tendons or ligaments. The surgeon may use sutures or anchors to reattach tissues securely to the bone. Once repairs are complete, the incisions are closed with sutures or surgical strips. After surgery, the arm is placed in a sling to immobilize the shoulder and allow healing. Patients may have swelling, stiffness, and discomfort for the first few weeks. Physical therapy is usually started gradually to regain range of motion and strength.
