When Is a Mastoidectomy Necessary?
Patients may consider a mastoidectomy if they have mastoiditis and it is not responding to antibiotics. If left untreated, the infection could spread to other areas of the skull. Therefore, it is important to be proactive in your treatment and ensure to consult your physician on different treatment options.
A mastoidectomy is necessary if:
- The patient has chronic mastoiditis
- The patient’s condition is not responding to antibiotics
- The infection is spreading

What To Expect
Patients are placed under general anesthesia. The surgeon reopens the previous incision and removes the existing artificial components from the shoulder joint. Any scar tissue or damaged bone is addressed, and new components are placed to restore joint function. In some cases, bone grafts or specialized implants may be used to ensure stability. Once the repair is complete, the incision is closed and dressed. Recovery is similar to that of a first-time shoulder replacement, with the arm supported in a sling and a gradual physical therapy program to restore function. However, because revision surgery is more complex, healing and rehabilitation may take longer.
