Shoulder Capsule Repair (Capsulorrhaphy)
When Is a Mastoidectomy Necessary?
Patients may consider a mastoidectomy if they have mastoiditis and it is not responding to antibiotics. If left untreated, the infection could spread to other areas of the skull. Therefore, it is important to be proactive in your treatment and ensure to consult your physician on different treatment options.
A mastoidectomy is necessary if:
- The patient has chronic mastoiditis
- The patient’s condition is not responding to antibiotics
- The infection is spreading

What To Expect
Patients are placed under general anesthesia. Small incisions are made around the shoulder to insert an arthroscope and surgical tools. The surgeon identifies areas where the shoulder capsule (the connective tissue around the joint) is loose or damaged. Using sutures, the capsule is tightened and reattached to restore stability. In some cases, anchors are placed in the bone to help secure the repair. Once complete, the incisions are closed and covered. Following surgery, the arm is kept in a sling for several weeks. Swelling, stiffness, and mild discomfort are expected. A guided physical therapy program is essential to regain shoulder function while protecting the repair during early healing.
