Total Shoulder Replacement

Total Shoulder Replacement is a surgical procedure that involves replacing both the damaged ball (humeral head) and socket (glenoid) of the shoulder joint with artificial implants. It is typically performed to relieve pain and restore function in cases of severe arthritis, fractures, or joint degeneration. The surgery involves removing the damaged bone and cartilage and implanting a metal ball and plastic socket to recreate a smooth, functional joint surface. This helps improve shoulder mobility, reduce pain, and enhance quality of life.

When Is a Mastoidectomy Necessary?

Patients may consider a mastoidectomy if they have mastoiditis and it is not responding to antibiotics. If left untreated, the infection could spread to other areas of the skull. Therefore, it is important to be proactive in your treatment and ensure to consult your physician on different treatment options.

A mastoidectomy is necessary if:

  • The patient has chronic mastoiditis
  • The patient’s condition is not responding to antibiotics
  • The infection is spreading

What To Expect

Patients are placed under general anesthesia. The surgeon makes an incision over the front or top of the shoulder. The damaged portions of the shoulder joint — including the head of the humerus (upper arm bone) and the glenoid (socket) — are carefully removed. Artificial components made of metal and plastic are then positioned to restore smooth movement. The components are secured, the incision is closed with sutures or staples, and a sterile dressing is applied. After surgery, the arm is placed in a sling to protect the joint. Patients can expect swelling, stiffness, and mild to moderate discomfort for several weeks. Physical therapy begins gradually, focusing on restoring range of motion before progressing to strengthening. Full recovery can take several months.
