Hand/Finger Tendon Repair

Hand/Finger Tendon Repair is a surgical procedure to fix torn or injured tendons in the hand or fingers that control movement and grip.  During the surgery, the surgeon carefully sutures the torn tendon ends back together, often under magnification, to restore function. Sometimes, tendon grafts or transfers are used if the tendon damage is extensive. The goal is to restore finger and hand movement, strength, and dexterity. Postoperative rehabilitation and therapy are essential for optimal recovery and to regain range of motion.

When Is a Mastoidectomy Necessary?

Patients may consider a mastoidectomy if they have mastoiditis and it is not responding to antibiotics. If left untreated, the infection could spread to other areas of the skull. Therefore, it is important to be proactive in your treatment and ensure to consult your physician on different treatment options.

A mastoidectomy is necessary if:

  • The patient has chronic mastoiditis
  • The patient’s condition is not responding to antibiotics
  • The infection is spreading

What To Expect

Patients receive regional anesthesia (numbing the arm) or general anesthesia. The surgeon makes an incision over the injured tendon in the hand or finger. Any damaged tissue is trimmed, and the ends of the tendon are carefully sewn back together using fine sutures. In some cases, a tendon graft may be used to replace severely damaged tissue. Once the repair is complete, the incision is closed, and the hand is placed in a protective splint to prevent movement. Following surgery, patients will need to wear the splint for several weeks. A specialized hand therapy program begins soon after to prevent stiffness and ensure the tendon heals with good movement and strength.
