1st Stage Reconstruction With Expanders, Bilateral Procedure
When is This Procedure Necessary?
Breast reconstruction is considered a cosmetic procedure, meaning it is not medically necessary. However, patients may consider undergoing this if they recently underwent a mastectomy as the result of breast cancer or another disease that warrants removal. A two-stage reconstruction process is a necessary approach if the patient does not have enough skin to hold the desired size of the implant.

What To Expect
Patients will be under general anesthesia to ensure their comfort throughout the procedure. Stage one of breast reconstruction with expanders will typically take place during the patient’s mastectomy. The surgeon will place expanders under the breasts, which are a small valve that will expand over time to stretch the skin and prepare it for implants. These implants will remain for approximately two months, and they will be filled with liquid or air from time to time at doctor’s appointments.
After the 1st stage of breast reconstruction, patients may experience pain and swelling, which is manageable with a course of anti-inflammatory pain medications. Patients can typically return to work after 3-4 weeks, but they should avoid heavy lifting and strenuous activity. Breast expanders are typically filled every 1-2 weeks.
