Excision of a Coccygeal Mass
When Is a Mastoidectomy Necessary?
Patients may consider a mastoidectomy if they have mastoiditis and it is not responding to antibiotics. If left untreated, the infection could spread to other areas of the skull. Therefore, it is important to be proactive in your treatment and ensure to consult your physician on different treatment options.
A mastoidectomy is necessary if:
- The patient has chronic mastoiditis
- The patient’s condition is not responding to antibiotics
- The infection is spreading

What To Expect
Patients are placed under general anesthesia. The surgeon makes a small incision over the tailbone area to access the mass. Using careful dissection, the mass is separated from surrounding tissues and completely removed. The area is checked for bleeding before the incision is closed with sutures and covered with a sterile dressing. After surgery, patients may have localized discomfort, especially when sitting. Special cushions may be recommended to reduce pressure during recovery. Most patients can resume light activities within one to two weeks, though healing time varies depending on the size and depth of the mass removed.
