Lumbar Discectomy with Artificial Disc Replacement
When Is a Mastoidectomy Necessary?
Patients may consider a mastoidectomy if they have mastoiditis and it is not responding to antibiotics. If left untreated, the infection could spread to other areas of the skull. Therefore, it is important to be proactive in your treatment and ensure to consult your physician on different treatment options.
A mastoidectomy is necessary if:
- The patient has chronic mastoiditis
- The patient’s condition is not responding to antibiotics
- The infection is spreading

What To Expect
Patients are placed under general anesthesia. Depending on the surgical plan, the surgeon makes an incision in the front or side of the body to access the spine. The damaged disc is removed, carefully freeing any compressed spinal nerves. An artificial disc is then positioned between the vertebrae to restore normal motion and stability. The incision is closed with sutures or staples, and a sterile dressing is applied. After surgery, patients may have mild to moderate discomfort at the incision site and in the back. Walking is typically encouraged soon after the procedure, but bending, twisting, and lifting are limited during the initial recovery. Physical therapy is often part of the rehabilitation plan to ensure optimal outcomes.
