Two-Level Lumbar Laminectomy

Two-Level Lumbar Laminectomy is a surgical procedure performed to relieve pressure on the spinal cord or nerve roots in the lower back caused by conditions such as spinal stenosis, herniated discs, or bone spurs. The surgery involves removing the lamina — the bony roof of the spinal canal — at two adjacent levels of the lumbar spine. This creates more space for the nerves, reducing pain, numbness, and weakness in the legs or lower back.

When Is a Mastoidectomy Necessary?

Patients may consider a mastoidectomy if they have mastoiditis and it is not responding to antibiotics. If left untreated, the infection could spread to other areas of the skull. Therefore, it is important to be proactive in your treatment and ensure to consult your physician on different treatment options.

A mastoidectomy is necessary if:

  • The patient has chronic mastoiditis
  • The patient’s condition is not responding to antibiotics
  • The infection is spreading

What To Expect

Patients are under general anesthesia. The surgeon makes an incision in the lower back over the affected area. Muscles are carefully moved aside to expose the vertebrae. The lamina — the bony covering over the spinal canal — is removed from two vertebrae to relieve pressure on the spinal cord or nerve roots. If needed, bone spurs or thickened ligaments may also be trimmed away. Once decompression is complete, the muscles are returned to their position, the incision is closed with sutures or staples, and a sterile dressing is applied. Following surgery, patients may experience soreness in the lower back and temporary leg weakness or numbness as nerves heal. Walking is encouraged within a day, but heavy lifting and strenuous activity should be avoided for several weeks. A gradual rehabilitation program may be recommended.
