Shoulder Arthroplasty (Total Shoulder, implants not included) Procedure
Shoulder arthroplasty, also known as shoulder replacement, is a surgical procedure that aims to restore the function of the shoulder joint. This procedure is often considered for patients that experience debilitating pain as a result of rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, or injury. The overall goal of this procedure is to restore function, improve mobility, and alleviate painful symptoms.
The shoulder joint is a ball-and-socket joint, meaning that the rounded top of one bone fits within the rounded cavity of another. When the articular cartilage is damaged as a result of arthritis, this joint becomes less functional, and using the shoulder can become very painful. Total shoulder arthroplasty involves the replacement of the entire joint using metal or plastic parts. This procedure differs from partial shoulder arthroplasty, in which only the head of the joint is replaced.
When is this Procedure Necessary?
Arthritis is a very common condition, and it often affects the shoulder joint due to prolonged wear and tear. Patients with arthritis should consult their physician when they begin experiencing pain. Early diagnosis can open the door for many treatment options and help prevent the need for surgical intervention. If diagnostic testing reveals that the patient requires treatment, doctors will typically begin recommending conservative therapies. This includes but is not limited to, physical therapy, pain medications, and lifestyle changes. If these therapies are ineffective, the patient may begin to consider surgical intervention. Total shoulder arthroplasty is a serious procedure and is only necessary in cases where the patient suffers from severe arthritis or injury. Patients may be a candidate for shoulder arthroplasty if:
- They experience debilitating shoulder pain as a result of arthritis or traumatic injury
- They have undergone diagnostic testing that reveals the joint is damaged
- Conservative efforts were not effective in alleviating pain
