Sagittal Band Repair (finger) Procedure

Sagittal band repair surgery is a specialized procedure conducted to correct sagittal band injuries in the hand. These bands are fibrous structures that keep the extensor tendons in place and allow smooth joint movement. However, trauma or overuse can result in a tear or rupture of these bands, leading to pain, instability, and limited finger mobility. During the procedure, the surgeon will repair the sagittal band using sutures.

When is This Procedure Necessary?

When these bands become damaged or disrupted, commonly due to repetitive stress, dislocation, or direct trauma, it can lead to various complications such as extensor tendon subluxation or dislocation, causing pain, restricted motion, and an inability to extend affected fingers fully. Conservative treatment options like splinting and physical therapy may be attempted initially, but when these fail to restore optimum hand function, surgery becomes necessary.

Preparing for Your Procedure

Patients will be under general anesthesia to ensure their comfort throughout the procedure. The surgeon then makes an incision along the appropriate anatomical structures, carefully avoiding any vital nerves or blood vessels. Once they have gained access to the affected area, the surgeon identifies and repairs any torn or damaged sagittal bands, ensuring that they are adequately reattached to their original position on the extensor hood of the finger.

After the procedure, patients will use a splint to prevent movement. It is normal for patients to experience pain at the site, and the doctor will prescribe pain medications so they can manage it.
