Hydrocelectomy Procedure
A hydrocelectomy is a surgical procedure to repair or remove a hydrocele, which is a fluid-filled sac that surrounds the testicle. Untreated, hydroceles can cause discomfort and swelling in the area around the scrotum. The goal of this procedure is to prevent fluid buildup from recurring by removing or repositioning the hydrocele. Typically, a hydrocelectomy is a fairly simple procedure and patients can return home the same day.
When is This Procedure Necessary?
Patients will consider a hydrocelectomy if a hydrocele is causing painful and debilitating symptoms. The doctor will work with the patient to determine the best treatment plan for their unique condition. If the hydrocele does not go away on its own or comes back after conservative efforts to drain, patients may consider surgical intervention.

What To Expect
Patients will be under general anesthesia to ensure their comfort throughout the procedure. The surgeon will make an incision in the scrotum to access the hydrocele. They will then drain the fluid from the sac before closing it off to prevent a hydrocele from reoccuring. When the goal of the procedure has been achieved, the surgeon will close the incision and the patient will be monitored as they are removed from the anesthesia.
After the procedure, patients may experience some form of discomfort as the surgical site heals. Patients are advised to rest and avoid heavy lifting or strenuous physical activity for several weeks following the surgery. It is important to follow post-operative care instructions carefully, including keeping the incision site clean and dry to prevent infection.
