Transperineal Urethroplasty Procedure

Transperineal urethroplasty is a surgical procedure to treat urethral injuries caused by pelvic fractures in adults. The goal of this procedure is to repair a narrowed urethra which can cause pain, infection, and kidney damage. Transperineal urethroplasty utilizes ultrasound technology and is often preferred over traditional approaches due to its lower risk of complications such as erectile dysfunction or incontinence.

When is This Procedure Necessary?

Transperineal urethroplasty is typically considered medically necessary when a patient presents with strictures or obstructions in the urethra that are causing significant urinary symptoms, such as difficulty urinating, frequent urinary tract infections, or urine retention. This procedure may be recommended after other less invasive treatments have failed to provide relief.

What To Expect

Patients will be under general anesthesia to ensure their comfort throughout the procedure. The surgeon will access the urethra by an incision and then rebuilding or restructuring the narrowed urethra. If the damage is large, the surgeon will collect a small piece of tissue to close the incision. Once the goals of the procedure have been achieved, the surgeon will close the incision and the patient will be monitored as they are removed from the anesthesia.

After the procedure, patients will use a catheter so they can urinate as the urethra is healing. Patients will be given pain medications to manage any discomfort they feel after the procedure. If the surgeon utilized tissue from your mouth, you will likely be given a medical mouthwash to keep the area clean. Patients need to attend follow-up appointments to ensure everything is healing properly.
