Parathyroidectomy Procedure
When is this Procedure Necessary?
A parathyroidectomy is considered medically necessary when the parathyroid gland produces an excess amount of the parathyroid hormone. This results in too much calcium in the blood, which can lead to the following symptoms:
- Weaker bones
- Kidney stones
- Heart and brain function
Fortunately, a parathyroidectomy is known to offer a valid solution to this condition.

What To Expect
Patients will be under general anesthesia to ensure their comfort throughout the procedure. The surgeon will begin by making a small incision at the neck to access the thyroid gland and the parathyroid glands. Next, the surgeon will assess the four parathyroid glands and remove any that are diseased. When the goal of the procedure has been achieved, the surgeon will close the incision and the patient will wake up.
The recovery process typically takes between 1 to 3 weeks. It is important that the patient keeps the incision site clean to prevent infection. Patients will be on a soft food diet in the days following the procedure to not irritate the throat. Patients will have a follow-up appointment to ensure the surgery was successful and everything is healing properly.
